GRATEFUL

If someone would help me with my wounds,
give me a crust of bread,
a drink of water,
I would be grateful.
If someone looked at me with a smile,
said hello,
patted me on my back,
stroked my fevered brow,
I would be grateful.
If someone gave me some clean clothes,
a pair of old shoes,
a place to get clean,
a warm bowl of soup,
I would be grateful.
If someone gave me a job,
any kind of work,
for minimum wage,
so I could feel like a man again,
I would work very hard,
and I would be grateful.
If my prayers are answered,
if there's a new tomorrow for me,
if there's light in this darkness,
if I find a way to see,
I will be grateful.
